According to the 2020 reports for statistical and other purposes (published in the “Financial Statements Annual Bulletin for 2020”) of 106,111 companies, which were received and processed in 2021 by the Serbian Business Registers Agency, 87% of the companies operating in the Republic of Serbia were micro-companies, 10.9% were small companies, 1.7% were medium-sized companies and 0.4% were large companies.

During the previous year, small and medium-sized companies were the main contributors to the increase in the total profitability of the economy. Their profit increased by a third, compared to the preceding year. The most noticeable increase in profitability - at a rate of 34.2% - was achieved by small companies.

The increase in the profitability of medium-sized companies was accompanied by a rise in the number of employees (+19,239). Small companies have achieved a better result while reducing the number of employees (-5,144).

The biggest positive net result was generated by large systems, whose total profit increased by 2.2% compared to the previous year. These companies have also recorded the highest increase in the number of employees (+29,101).

Business operations of micro-companies, which remained in the sphere of a negative result, were the most affected by the consequences of the crisis. Their loss decreased by 16.4% at the annual level, while the number of their employees increased compared to the previous year (+396).
